Arom Calatayud Garnacha 2018 was one of the standouts at a recent tasting. The aroma jumped out of the glass and the quality of fruit on show was just immense.
It's 100% Garnacha from Calatayud in Spain. Located in Spain's north-east in the province of Aragon, it's an arid zone with the River Jalon running through it. The area has around 5000 hectares under vine with Garnacha taking up two-thirds of its plantings.
This particular wine is made by Spanish MW (Master of Wine) Fernando Mora with the aim of redefining the style of Garnacha to be elegant and fresh. There is only 20k bottles produced!
To emphasise this new style, the grapes are 30% whole bunch pressed and fermented in concrete with natural yeasts. The nose is super fragrant, there's grippy tannin to be had, but it's not punching you in the mouth. Juicy with a scented length, really enjoyable!
