Sugars are formed naturally, and can remain in the grape juice depending on how much of it is consumed by yeast and turned into alcohol during the fermentation process.

  • Dry wine: Usually, the drier the wine, the less sugar is present in the bottle. In that case, there are about 1 to 3 grams of sugar in each bottle.

  • Sparkling wine: This has significantly more sugars than dry wine. Sparkling wines have about 6 to 20 grams of sugar per litre of wine.

  • Fortified Wine: If you're into really sweet wine, fortified wines are your best bet since they have about 150 grams per litre.

  • Semi-Dry Wine: An in-between of dry wine and sparkling wine would be the semi-dry wine since it has about 10 to 50 grams of sugar per litre.

Some winemakers add sugar into wine not to make it sweeter, but to encourage yeast production to boost more alcohol. This whole process is called chaptalisation.

Chaptalisation is adding sugar into wine to promote yeast to make more alcohol. This process can be used on both white and red wines to obtain greater alcohol content and to reduce bitterness. Done poorly though, and it can render the wine unbalanced.
