Devling straight into Spain, showing off small batch wine at its best.
Monopole Clasico Blanco 2017 has the most interesting story behind it. The cool thing about this wine is the process and its history. Uniquely it's a blend of Viura and Palomino. With the Palomino component being Manzanilla and brought up from Cadiz. This addition, therefore, gives the Classico an amazingly complex aromatic profile. Which integrates perfectly with the Viura.
Asua Crianza 2017 is just crazy good value. CVNE can be misunderstood but this wine is proof that no matter what level or price they are making wine, they always overdeliver. Hand-harvested with extended maceration. 14 months in French and American oak. Then bottled and left to mature for 6 months. 2017 as a vintage saw a growing cycle of 161 days. Overall a good ripening period and a decent vintage.
Maro El Rosado 2019 we look at La Mancha, Spain. Situated on a plateau that's 600m above sea level, the sub-region is dry but fertile. Highly continental with hot summers but cold winters. Great diurnal range with warm days and cold nights, this helps retain natural acidity. Fresh and fragrant strawberries, berries and cherries. Bone dry and crisp. The emphasis here is on pristine fruit and a fresh palate. Its low alcohol and light body makes it totally smashable! Perfect with pizza or pasta.
CVNE Maceration Carbonica 2017, its just banging juice that offers exceptional value for money with a super cool label. If you haven't heard of Carbonic Maceration, or in Spanish Maceration Carbonica let us explain! Essentially is a different method of fermentation that produces softer tannin with a juicy smooth mouthfeel and texture. It can make a wine a lot more gluggable but when done right also adds some extra layers of complexity. As soon as you pour this wine, the aromas bounce out of the glass. Lots of black currants, strawberry and ripe plum. The palate has the same fruit expression with smooth but juicy tannin and a lovely textured mouthfeel. There is a scented, long length that's actually very pleasant and makes the wine very easy to drink.
Mas Comtal Pomell de Blancs 2019 is a unique blend of Chardonnay and Xare-lo from Penedes. Pomell is a Catalan word meaning a bouquet of several different wildflowers. Being as this is a blend and also a very fragrant wine, they wanted to draw on this analogy. Pomell de Blanc is made from 73% Chardonnay and 27% Xarelo. It sees three months of lees ageing, which adds an abundance of mouthfeel and length. Star bright and clear, light straw lemon in colour. White melon, ripe apple and a touch of lemon on the nose.
Arom Calatayud Garnacha 2018 It's 100% Garnacha from Calatayud in Spain. Located in Spain's northeast in the province of Aragon, it's an arid zone with the River Jalon running through it. The area has around 5000 hectares under vine with Garnacha taking up two-thirds of its plantings. This particular wine is made by Spanish MW (Master of Wine) Fernando Mora with the aim of redefining the style of Garnacha to be elegant and fresh. There is only 20k bottles produced!
