Finding Langhe Nebbiolo under £30 is an uncommon thing at best, and of a quality such as this, simply extraordinary.
"Organic Nebbiolo with a pale ruby colour. A delicately aromatic nose and medium-bodied palate".
The Fenocchio family started farming in Barbaresco in the early nineteenth century. Farming was mixed but Renato’s side of the family specialised in grape growing from 1980. He and his wife Milva now have 13ha - all in Barbaresco - and only began making their own wine in 2000, the grapes having been sold previously to a co-operative. The wines are amazingly good for one who has made wine for a comparatively short time, but then Renato claims to have been winemaking with his father from the age of 6!
As far as winemaking goes, they say; "our philosophy when making wine is simple: tradition. We believe the process and techniques practiced by farmers for hundreds of years is the only way to obtain the true wines of the region".
The warm, sunny climate of northern Italy nurtured Nebbiolo grapes from the highly acclaimed Barberesco sub-region to utter perfection in this wonderful offering by Renato Fenocchio.
This Langhe Nebbiolo, redolent of dried rose petals, summery spice and sour cherry, is pleasing and bright while at the same time complex and deeply nuanced. Well-balanced tannins and mouth-watering acidity make for an excellent pairing with fine smoked charcuterie or wild boar pappardelle.
