Pizzini King Valley Arneis 2018 is, an unusual variety for Australia, but this is a near-perfect expression. It's a wine geek delights, but also amazingly food-friendly. 100% stainless ferment here, 6 months on lees which adds a lot of texture and mouthful, and also rounds out the acid. For the fermentation, Joel uses an Alsation yeast strain, just crazy good. The fruit profile is loaded with pears, melon and red apples. Lots of concentration and a lovely delicate length.
The Pizzini family moved to Australia sometime after WWII and started growing grapes in the late ’70s. 1990 marked the first vintage under their own label, Pizzini Wines. Nebbiolo was the first, paying homage to their Italian roots. Therefore becoming specialists in Italian varietals in Australia. They continue to set the benchmark for quality and value for money, one of many reasons why we love them.
Nebbiolo wasn’t the only Italian variety, however, with Verduzzo, Pinot Grigio and Arneis, to name a few, becoming just as important. The Pizzini King Valley Verduzzo 2019 showcases how well Australia produces wines of texture and aroma. For instance, the partial fermentation in new oak has added so much complexity while rounding acidity. The flavours are rich and pure with a scented length. Above all though, this wine punches so far above its weight it's crazy.
