We have a soft spot for Beaujolais, especially when it has a little age to it. It offers such good value for money, all you need is a little know-how to understand the appellations. This 2018 Fleurie comes off of vineyards below the slopes of the Chapelle de la Madone. The soil profile here is one of granite and sand helping disease resistance. It's 100% Gamay and this sub-region is often referred to as the Queen of Beaujolais. Whatever that means, we like it mainly due to the palate quality, aroma and overall drinkability.
Fleurie is one of 10 Beaujolais crus located pretty much in its centre, lying south of Moulin a Vent. It’s hand harvest and delicately treated throughout. Fleurie is known to produce a lighter style of Gamay and this wine follows that path. It’s a whole bunch fermented over around 10-15 days, the aroma is just spectacular.
The Souzy Fleurie is juicy, with grippy tannin and lots of red and blackberries. There is a touch of blossom and fresh flowers but the purity of fruit really stands out. Delicate with a scented length, enjoy with pizza, calzone, or tomato-based pasta dishes.
