The 2018 vintage in Rioja was an unpredictable when it came to the weather conditions, which meant an even greater level of diligence than usual was required in the vineyards to maintain the health of the grapes. That being said, the job was carried out expertly, with the quality of the grapes justifying the use of oak to complement the primary flavour profile, resulting in a Crianza designation, after 12 months ageing in used American barrels. From here we have a wine full of ripe red fruits, with a hint of spice and an elegant finish.
Headed by winemaker María Barúa, the Gran Dominio wines are made with a precision that perfectly reflect the terroirs of Rioja Alta. This is owing greatly to María’s eye for detail and understanding of her native region, along with her academic background in chemistry and her oenology degree. Combine this with with her young and energetic team, and you have a coalescence of variables that is hard to better in Rioja.
