Viladellops Xarel·lo is a white wine produced by the winery Finca Viladellops, in Olèrdola, D.O. Penedès. The winery located in the Macizo del Garraf, a 15 km mountain range situated along the Mediterranean coast. This mountain range is known for its calcareous soils and the presence of marine fossils.
The variety Xarel-lo is usually reserved for blending into sparkling wines such as Cava but it is a struggle to see why with wines like this. Viladellops Xarel-lo has a very subtle nose of fennel and white fruit belies the full-bodied, rich palate.
Finca Viladellops Xarel-lo is a bright golden colour, the nose is floral and buttery, which is hardly noticeable oak notes, despite its long ageing. There is a marked presence of mineral elements, enhanced by the permanence of the lees during wine ageing. The palate is full and complex but retains its freshness and balance due to the correct acidity. It is also a remarkable evolution of this wine by the glass, and slowly peeling different levels of aromatic complexity.
