Caliterra Pétreo Malbec 2016, what a great label! The juice is also pretty good. Malbec from Chile isn't really a big thing, considering the amount of Malbec produced just across the mountains in Argentina. But here we are, a really smashing example of Malbec.
There is a pretty interesting process here too. Fermentation takes place in both stainless steel and French oak barrels. The split is 65% stainless steel and 35% old oak. Then, 45% of it is aged in second and third fill oak barrels and 55% is aged on clay amphoras.
The Caliterra Pétreo range is very limited, there isn't much of it produced. There is even less imported to the UK. We love it because of the great quality and value and also the uniqueness. All in all, the wine is totally smashable while being super food-friendly and complex.
Expect smooth tannin, juicy ripe fruit and a soft floral spicy finish. Weighted and concentrated throughout, decant for 30 minutes to an hour and serve at cellar temperature, 18 degrees.
