BLANKbottle Master of None 2021 is nothing short of epic. Starting in 2004 by winemaker Pieter H Walser he makes 37 different South African wines and never repeats one. This means these wines are one-offs. During our South African hunt, we tasted 3 of the BLANKbottle range, and we listed all of them!
The 2021 vintage is a take on the phrase, Jack of all trades, master of none. This refers to the number of different varietals Pieter works with and claims to not be a master of one. After tasting his wine, however, he is a master at making them.
The Master of None 2021 red is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Fernao Pirez, Chenin Blanc, Palomino, Weisser Riesling. The most important thing here is the white grape component. In this vintage there is a lot of smaller parcel white grapes, adding more and more layers of juiciness. Do not let this put you off, this wine is so balanced and integrated it showcases a style of wine that is smooth and delicate and so easy to drink it's scary. It's fragrant up front, with lots of layers. The palate is soft and juicy with lots of concentration. Long and scented length, and totally smashable.
