S.C. Pannell Smart Clarendon Grenache 2018. For those who haven't heard or had Stephen's wine before, you're seriously missing out. He has been single-handedly fighting the good fight for Aussie wine and how a more Mediterranean approach to varietals should be undertaken in the region of McLaren Vale. With some serious pedigree about him, access to the most unique and top quality vineyards in Australia, it's no surprise he won numerous awards.
This doesn't mean his wine is unapproachable or out of your league, quite the opposite. His wines convey a sense of place, a less is more approach and a focus on sub regionality. The Grenache comes off of the highest altitude vineyard in the Vale, the Smart Vineyard. It sits about 230m above sea level and is home to 64-year-old bush vines.
Now the aroma here is pretty crazy and intense, there's bacon fat (I know, I know) toast, ripe raspberries, violets, forest herbs and spice. The palate is bone dry but with a juicy to it. Ripe and firm tannin, with a long scented finish. Super layered and complex throughout and is a serious food wine. Serve at cellar temperature for max enjoyment.
