Henschke Mount Edelstone 2016 is the new release. It comes off of a 16-hectare single vineyard situated 400m above sea level in the Eden Valley. The vineyard was originally planted in 1912, it's been released as a single vineyard expression since 1957. Making this wine the oldest and most continuously single-vineyard expression in Australia.
On top of all this, the vineyard sees both organic and bio-dynamic practices. The 100% Shiraz comes from 100+ year-old vines which are hand-harvested in the early morning to keep the fruit as cold as possible. Harvested and processed in single block runs from the vineyard, the grapes are de-stemmed and lightly crushed. It's fermented in small open-top concrete fermenters. Fermentation is finished in oak barrels, a mix of French and American. It sits in barrel for 18 months before blending and is then bottle matured for a further 3 years ahead of its release.
The producer states that the 2016 vintage was a testy one, with a lot of heat and little rain. Overall the yield and therefore quantity available was down, but the quality remained. Due mainly to the consistency of the old, well-established vineyard.
